A chain whip is a tool used to "hold" the sprocket set on the rear wheel of a bicycle when loosening the screw that holds the sprocket set on the freewheel body.
If the gear rim package were not fixed, the freewheel would become effective and the gear rim package would rotate with it.
You do not need a chain whip when screwing down the sprocket screw.
